“Rob & Kristen Confirm They’re Dating — to Oprah!” screams a headline that sent Twilight fans into a frenzy this afternoon.

According to an E! Online story, when the cameras weren’t rolling on Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner and Dakota Fanning – for an episode to air May 13 – Oprah Winfrey asked Pattinson and Stewart backstage if they were really a couple.

The report claims they “confirmed to Oprah backstage they are in fact dating.”

Oprah supposedly informed Pattinson and Stewart that she had to “go there” and ask on-camera if they were or weren’t together, knowing they wouldn’t address it seriously in public. But privately, “she wanted to know what was really happening.”

Says a so-called “spy”: “Obviously Oprah had to ask something during the taping, but agreed beforehand she wouldn’t be too hard on [Rob and Kristen] if they told her what was really going on. Both Rob and Kristen’s people and Summit then confirmed ahead of time [Rob and Kristen] are together and are dating. One hundred percent.”

Whether Pattinson and Stewart are dating is really up to them to discuss. Just this week in Elle magazine, Stewart said, “I would never cheapen my relationships by talking about them.”

But one thing Gossip Cop knows for a fact – after spending a good part of the day working on this – is that NO reps ever confirmed to Oprah that the two stars “are together and are dating.”

That scenario never happened, and when asked whether Oprah got the scoop off-camera because she simply had to know, a rep for the talk show queen tells Gossip Cop “it’s not true.”

LONDON -- Kristen Stewart, Sam Riley and Garrett Hedlund are walking the line for Walter Salles' long-anticipated big-screen adaptation of Jack Kerouac's "On The Road."

Shooting is set to begin in August on the $25 million budgeted production, backers said Thursday.

Salles' producing partner Rebecca Yeldham is teaming up with French production banner MK2 who snapped up the rights and will produce the film in collaboration with Film 4 in the U.K. and Videofilmes in Brazil.

Salles traveled across the U.S. in Kerouac's footsteps to prepare the adaptation, filming a documentary on the search for "On The Road" as part of his prep.

Oscar nominated scribe Jose Rivera ("The Motorcycle Diaries") has penned the adaptation for Salles.

Stewart will play the role of Dean Moriarty's incandescent on-and-off wife Marylou while Riley will star as author Jack Kerouac's alter ego Sal Paradise. Hedlund has been cast as Dean Moriarty.

"We are enormously proud to be collaborating on one of the last great cinematographic adventures of the 20th century to be brought to the screen," stated MK2's Nathanael Karmitz and Charles Gillibert.

Kerouac's cult novel of youth and freedom was first published in 1957 and has sold several million copies all over the world.

Don't expect Kristen Stewart to open up about her romantic life anytime soon. She's only becoming more protective of her privacy – what's left of it – as time goes by.

"I would never cheapen my relationships by talking about them," Stewart, 20, tells Elle for its June issue. "People say, 'Just say who you're dating. Then people will stop being so ravenous about it.' It's like, No they won't! They'll ask for specifics."

So, whether those specifics include Twilight costar Robert Pattinson, she's still not saying publicly – all part of a strategy to give herself some space in a world that won't leave her alone.

"Somebody knocked on my hotel room door and asked for a light, then said that they were a big fan," she recalls. "I was like, 'Do you really need me to light your cigarette? How do you know what room I'm in?' I can't be by myself and I like being by myself."

If she looks miserable in the public eye – on red carpets, for instance – it's because of this trapped feeling in the unpleasant heat of the spotlight. "It's not that I'm miserable, it's just that somebody's yelling at me," she says. "I literally, sometimes, have to keep myself from crying. … It's a physical reaction to the energy that's thrown at you."

And don't even get her started on the paparazzi. "It's insane!" she says. "Once somebody finds out, you have to get the hell out of wherever you are. People freak out. And the photographers, they're vicious. They're mean. They're like thugs. I don't event want to drive around by myself anymore. It's [expletive] dangerous."
